Hosted vs Open Source
One big thing that makes Wall.fm unique is that it offers the open source version of its platform - Oxwall social networking software. Apart from philosophic reasons and long-term existence guarantees it's useful to compare the two options of you running your site on our platform:

In general Wall.fm saves you from all the technical hassle. On the other hand it inevitably puts restrictions and defines which features are available because it needs to deliver the best average product for hundreds thousands communities.
Oxwall gives you universal freedom and make you independent of anyone's decisions. On the other hand it puts all the technical burden on you.
We think it's easiest and fastest for the majority of new communities to try out Wall.fm first and go independent with Oxwall later if the need arises. If you know what you do and/or absolutely sure you will have to go independent sooner or later, feel free to go with Oxwall from the start.
